Air Quality in Mammoth Unhealthy for All This Afternoon

The latest concentration of particulate matter in our air as reported at 3:18 PM by the Great Basin Unified Air Pollution Control District in Mammoth Lakes is 291.9 ug/m2. This smoke continues to be from the Empire Fire burning in Yosemite National Park. This level of pollution is unhealthy for all persons.

How Does particulate matter Affect Our Health?

Particulate matter is among the most harmful of all air pollutants. When inhaled, these particles evade the respiratory system's natural defenses and lodge deep in the lungs.

Health problems begin as the body reacts to these foreign particles. They can increase the number and severity of asthma attacks, cause or aggravate bronchitis and other lung diseases, and reduce the body's ability to fight infections. Everyone may begin to experience health effects. People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion.

Although particulate matter can cause health problems for everyone, certain people are especially vulnerable to adverse health effects. These "sensitive populations" include children, the elderly, exercising adults, and those suffering from asthma or bronchitis.

Of greatest concern are recent studies that link exposure to the premature death of people who already have heart and lung disease, especially the elderly.
