Public Benefits for Immigrants

Public Charge [1]

Public Benefits for Immigrants

Mono County provides public benefits for immigrants, including food, cash, and health care assistance.

We are closely monitoring actions by the federal administration and will update our website as accurate information affecting our programs becomes available. See information for WIC and other public benefits below.

Important: Every situation is different. To learn how getting public benefits may affect your immigration status, consult an immigration attorney or a trusted legal expert. You may also want to review this guide [2] and consult with a trusted immigration legal services provider [3] funded through the California Department of Social Services. Please be cautious of immigration scams.

Medi-Cal, CalFresh and CalWORKs

You may qualify for Medi-Cal, CalFresh, or CalWORKs depending on your income, household size, and immigration status.

  • When you apply, you’ll be asked for the immigration status of anyone applying.
  • You do not need to share immigration status for family members who aren’t applying.

Women, Infants, & Children (WIC)

  • You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to qualify for WIC. Parents can apply on behalf of their children, even if the parents or children are not U.S. citizens.
  • WIC does not ask for or collect your immigration or citizenship information. WIC participation is not a factor for who qualifies as a “public charge.”
  • WIC eligibility requirements have not changed under the new federal administration. (As always, changes in the law can occur.)
